Mangaluru: Anticipating a potential summer power shortage due to reduced rainfall compared to previous years, Karnataka Energy Minister KJ George has assured that comprehensive measures are underway to address the situation. These include increased power purchases and a boost in production to tackle the impending challenges.
At a district-level consultation meeting with MESCOM and KPTCL on Monday, State Energy Minister KJ George shared insights into the proactive measures being taken to address the situation.
Minister George highlighted various strategies, including increased power purchase from other states and central electricity grid, and enhanced production. The commissioning of a gas-based power generation station at Yalahanka is expected to provide 380 megawatts of electricity. Additionally, power is being sourced from Himachal Pradesh, and arrangements have been made to supply coal without limitations to coal-based power generation stations.
Efforts to bolster hydropower generation were also discussed, with plans to recycle water in Varahi and Sharavati. Pump storage technology will be employed to boost hydropower generation, aiming for the generation of 1,000 megawatts in Sharavati within 2-3 years, he said.
Addressing challenges related to land acquisition for power transmission lines, the Minister hinted at a possible review of solutions, considering the concerns raised by Legislative Council member BM Farooq regarding proper compensation for landowners.
Goerge said that a Green Hydrogen pilot project will be established in Mangaluru, with plans for a 300-kilowatt green hydrogen plant. Minister George highlighted the ample opportunities in this field for the city, drawing inspiration from successful green hydrogen schemes in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
