Bengaluru: An elderly looking person, posing as a customer allegedly stole a diamond ring, valued at Rs 75 lakh from a reputed jewellery showroom on MG Road under Cubbon Park police station limits.

As per the complaint, lodged by the showroom manager V M Shibin, the man visited their showroom on February 18 evening and asked to see some expensive diamond rings.

Jimmy Roy, one of the staff members attended to the person who they considered was a genuine customer and showed him a few rings of different designs. The accused smartly diverted Roy’s attention by asking to see some other designs and swapped a diamond ring kept on the display tray with an artificial one.

Later, when Roy asked for the customer’s details such as Aadhar card for billing purpose, the accused made some excuse and fled the showroom.

The theft came to light the next day, when the showroom staff were checking the inventory and found a fake diamond ring. The accused was identified after examining the CCTV footage.

When the showroom staff enquired about the accused at other jewellery shops they found that a similar looking person had visited a showroom in Marathahalli on February 17 and the showroom at Kammanahalli on February 18. There too he posed as a customer and had wanted to see expensive diamond jewellery. He however was unable to execute his plan at these showrooms, police said.
