Family members of a 44-year-old woman from Shivamogga who was injured in a road accident and was declared as brain dead donated her organs thereby potentially saving the lives of other patients.

Lalithamma was recently injured in a road accident and despite the dedicated efforts of medical professionals at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, her condition remained critical. She was later declared brain dead by a panel of expert doctors, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994.

Despite their loss, Lalithamma’s family decided to donate her viable organs. Following the protocols and decisions outlined by Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bengaluru, the donated organs were allocated to recipients in urgent need.

The lungs were swiftly transported to KIMS Hospital, Hyderabad, while the liver found its way to Sparsh Hospital, Bengaluru. Additionally, one kidney was allocated to Unity Hospital, Mangaluru, while Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, retained one kidney and corneas for registered patients awaiting transplantation.

Dr. Avinash Shetty, the Medical Superintendent at Kasturba Hospital, expressed profound gratitude towards Lalithamma’s family for their noble decision. He emphasized the significance of organ donation in saving lives and urged the community to support such altruistic endeavors.
