The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for heatwave conditions for 17 districts in Karnataka. The alert is effective until May 2, 2024, it said.

According to the Meteorological Department, hot winds are expected to sweep through many parts of the state during this period.

The districts placed under the orange alert for Heatwave warning include Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Yadagiri, Raichur, Bagalkote, Belagavi, Gadag, Haveri, Koppal, Ballari, Vijayanagar, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Kolar, and Chikkaballapura.

Coastal regions, particularly Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi, are also predicted to experience the brunt of the rising temperatures.

The IMD forecasts that temperatures could soar by 2-3 degrees Celsius from their current levels, exacerbating the already challenging heat conditions.

Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions to stay safe and cool during the anticipated heatwave. As the state braces itself for the impending hot spell, authorities advise citizens to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and seek shelter in well-ventilated areas when possible.
