Proactive response: Mangalore University likely to shift class timings to beat rising heat

In response to the escalating heat wave gripping coastal regions, Mangalore University has made a significant decision to commence classes at government degree colleges earlier in the morning. This proactive step aims to mitigate the adverse effects of intense sun exposure on students.

The discretion to implement early morning classes rests with the respective college principals, affirmed DK Joint Director of the College Education Department. Recognizing the pressing need to shield students from excessive heat, the department advocates for early commencement of classes or, alternatively, granting leave if conditions demand.

Concerns voiced by parents prompted action, culminating in a petition submitted to the District Collector. Responding promptly, the Collector directed the Deputy Director of the College Education Department to conduct a comprehensive review. Subsequently, a video conference convened by the department with college principals facilitated dialogue and decision-making.

Speaking on behalf of Carstreet College, Prof. Jayakara Bhandary acknowledged the directive to initiate early morning classes for graduates. However, logistical challenges arise, particularly for students commuting from distant locales such as Kerala. Bhandary emphasized the complexities involved in adjusting schedules, citing the current 9:30 AM start time and the practical difficulties faced by students traveling long distances.

The ripple effect of this decision extends beyond government degree colleges to encompass subordinate and autonomous colleges under Mangalore University’s purview. Each college’s governing body will deliberate and decide on the implementation of similar measures, aligning with the university’s proactive stance.
