Mangaluru: Following the rainfall in the past few days, the water level in the Thumbe vented dam that irrigates Mangalore has risen to 5.5 meters on Tuesday. The increase in water flow in the Netravati River has led to the diversion of surplus water from the AMR dam at Shambhur in Bantwal to the Thumbe dam on Monday.
On Monday, the Thumbe dam recorded a water level of 3.42 meters, which increased to 3.68 meters by Tuesday morning. By evening, the water level had surged to 5.5 meters. The dam has a maximum storage height of 6 meters.
Typically, the dam’s gates are opened in June after it fills, but heavy rains over the past two days have led to an early overflow.
Last year on May 21, the water level in the dam was significantly lower at 3.20 meters.
Suspension of Water Rationing
The rise in the water level at Tumbe Dam has led the Mangaluru City Corporation to suspend the water rationing that was in effect within its jurisdiction. Water rationing in Mangaluru city had been implemented from April 4 due to a drinking water crisis, with water being supplied to the city every other day.
Udupi: Inflow into Swarna River improves
Due to consistent rainfall over the past three days, the inflow is expected to improve in the Swarna River in Udupi within the next two days. Following this, it is anticipated that water rationing in Udupi will also be suspended.
The recent heavy rains have brought significant relief to the region, alleviating concerns over water scarcity and ensuring a more stable water supply for the coming weeks.
