Monsoon expected to hit Coastal Karnataka soon

Mangaluru/Udupi: According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the monsoon is expected to reach Kerala in the next three to four days. It is predicted to hit the coastal areas of Karnataka a day or two later. A “yellow alert” has been issued for May 29 and 30, with a likelihood of heavy rainfall.

In Mangaluru, the maximum temperature dropped to 31.3°C on Tuesday, which is 1.4°C below the usual. The minimum temperature recorded was 26.7°C, 2°C above normal.

Moderate Rain in Coastal Districts

Some places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts experienced moderate rain on Tuesday. Several areas in Udupi district saw light rain, with Udupi, Manipal, and Malpe having occasional drizzles amidst cloudy and sunny weather. Despite this, the heat was intense.

Recollecting the Deluge of Six Years Ago

On May 29, 2018, heavy rain had brought Mangaluru to a standstill, claiming two lives. The district received 36.8 cm of rain in just six hours, damaging around 560 houses and causing losses estimated at ₹20.47 crores.

NDRF Team to Arrive Within a Week

To handle emergency situations, the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) is expected to arrive in Dakshina Kannada district within a week. The team will come from the 10th Battalion in Vijayawada. Currently, a 25-member SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) team is stationed in Mangaluru and is ready for action.
