Uppinangady: An under-construction concrete slab, along with the iron rods attached to it, collapsed during the extension work of National Highway 75 in Rekhya village here on Wednesday.
The incident occurred due to the slab’s inability to bear the weight of the concrete being poured.
The construction of a new bridge over a stream is underway as part of the highway expansion between Addahole and B.C. Road. The pillar work had been completed, and on the evening of May 29, concrete was being poured onto the slabs and iron rods using a machine.
Approximately 10 meters of concrete was being poured. The slab, unable to withstand the weight, collapsed into the stream along with the iron rods and concrete.
This incident has halted the construction work at the site.
Fortunately, since the concrete was being poured using a machine, no casualties occurred.
The members of the public have alleged that the mishap might be due to substandard construction, blaming the incident on not installing proper support beams.
Vehicles have been plying on the newly constructed bridge adjacent to the site for the past few days.
