Bengaluru breaks 133-year record for single-day rainfall in June

PTI, Jun 3, 2024, 6:01 PM IST

Bengaluru experienced an extraordinary weather event on June 2, receiving 111 mm of rainfall in a single day, shattering a 133-year-old record, according to Met department officials.

N Puviarasan, a scientist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, confirmed the record-breaking rainfall to PTI, noting that the rainfall on June 1 and June 2 exceeded the monthly average for June.

Local ‘X’ user @Bnglweatherman reported that this exceeded the monthly average, previously set at 110.3 mm, in just one day. The last highest single-day rainfall in June dated back to June 16, 1891.

The intense downpour brought Bengaluru to a standstill, with significant disruptions reported, particularly in Jayanagar, where residents posted images of fallen trees on social media. A tree fell on the Metro track near Trinity Metro station, causing inconvenience to commuters.

IMD Centre Bengaluru head C S Patil announced that the southwest monsoon has advanced over Karnataka, with a yellow alert issued for several districts until June 5. Heavy rainfall is expected in various districts, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Bengaluru’s urban and rural areas.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar stated he would visit the rain-affected areas for inspections and plans to hold an official meeting after the Legislative Council polls to address rain-related issues.
