IAF played vital role in 2024 LS polls, flew more than 1,000 hours in over 1,750 sorties

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has played a critical role in the 2024 general elections, extending the reach of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to remote parts of the country. In a statement released on Wednesday, the IAF disclosed its substantial involvement in the electoral process.

IAF aircraft flew more than 1,000 hours in over 1,750 sorties, primarily using medium-lift helicopters like Mi-17 variants, light utility helicopters such as Chetak, and the indigenously manufactured advanced light helicopters, ALH Dhruv. These efforts ensured that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were airlifted and Election Commission personnel were deployed effectively.

This initiative was essential in areas where road movement posed security challenges or was unfeasible. The IAF’s role was pivotal in five out of the seven election phases, contributing significantly to the smooth conduct of the elections. This collaboration with the ECI and various state CEOs underscored the importance of optimizing resources while considering security, weather, and road connectivity. Assets from the Indian Army and BSF were also integrated into the overall plan to ensure the elections were conducted seamlessly.
