Kasaragod: In a humanitarian gesture, nursing staff at Kasaragod General Hospital breastfed an infant after its mother died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Ekadashi Mali, wife of Rajesh Barman, hailing from Assam had given birth to a baby at Parayaram Medical College Hospital on May 5. She was later admitted to Kasaragod General Hospital after she complained of vomitting. She died on June 13 without responding to the treatment.
The deceased’s body was kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem. Meanwhile, the 37-day-old baby Riya Barman began crying of hunger.
A nursing officer at the hospital, Merin, was moved hearing the baby’s cries and breastfed it.
Mary has received praise for her act of kindness. Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jamal Ahmad has congratulated her.
