With the monsoon gaining momentum, the Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several districts across Karnataka, including Bengaluru and the coastal regions. From June 23, heavy rains are expected to lash most districts in the coastal and Malnad regions. Consequently, a red alert has been declared for the coastal districts until June 25.
On June 24, heavy rainfall is anticipated in Dharwad, Haveri, Chikkamagaluru, Davangere, Shivamogga, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, and Shivamogga. A red alert has been issued for these areas. Additionally, a yellow alert has been announced for the northern regions, including Belagavi.
Red Alert for Coastal Districts
The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall across the state for the next three days. Coastal districts are expected to experience the most intense rainfall, continuing until June 25. An orange alert has been declared for the coastal areas on June 22, followed by a red alert on June 23 and 24.
Heavy rains are already being reported across the state. While Bengaluru has experienced moderate rainfall in several areas, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall for Bengaluru and its rural districts. The past two days have seen overcast conditions and light showers, but rainfall is expected to intensify starting today.
Although the monsoon arrived slightly earlier this year, the month of June has been marked by a rainfall deficit. The Meteorological Department reported a 20% deficit in average rainfall across the country. From June 1 to 18, the country received 64.5 mm of rainfall, resulting in a 20% deficit. Northern India has experienced below-average rainfall, whereas Southern India has received 106.6 mm of rainfall, marking a 16% surplus.
