Karavali coast: Heavy rainfall expected till June 26

Mangaluru: Following the forecast by the India Meteorological Department and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, an orange or red alert will remain in effect in Dakshina Kannada district until June 26.

In light of this, widespread rainfall is expected, and DK Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan has advised officials and the public to take necessary precautions.

Parents are urged to prevent children from going to low-lying areas, lakes, riverbanks, and seashores. District and taluk-level officials have been instructed to stay at their headquarters and manage disaster response diligently.

Incident commanders appointed to various areas by the district administration must remain vigilant and respond promptly to public grievances. They must maintain continuous contact with the control room at the District Commissioner’s office.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea, and all fishing boats currently at sea must return to shore immediately. Concerned department officials are instructed to open and keep care centers in each taluk on standby.

NDRF and SDRF Preparedness

In anticipation of heavy rains, NDRF and SDRF teams are on standby in Dakshina Kannada district. A 30-member NDRF team led by Deepak Kumar is stationed in Uppinangady. A 10-member SDRF team is prepared in Subrahmanya, and a 25-member team is on standby in Mangaluru. These teams are ready to move to various parts of the district as needed.

Heavy Rainfall

Coastal areas witnessed heavy rainfall on Sunday, with significant downpours in Mangaluru city and across Dakshina Kannada district. Mangaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8°C, 0.4°C above normal, and a minimum temperature of 23.5°C, 0.1°C above normal. An orange alert has been declared from June 24 to 27, with expectations of heavy rain and strong winds. Sea waves are also expected to be rough during this period.

Rough Sea Conditions Expected

Mangaluru/Kasaragod: The coastal areas of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Kerala are expected to experience rough sea conditions with large waves. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has issued a warning for fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution.

From the night of June 23 to 11:30 PM on June 25, rough sea conditions with wave heights ranging from 3.1 to 3.4 meters are expected from Mangaluru to Mulki, and from 3.2 to 3.3 meters from Kapu to Byndoor. Similar conditions are expected along the coasts of Uttara Kannada and Kerala.

Moderate Rainfall in Udupi

Udupi: Several areas in the district received moderate rainfall. Udupi, Manipal, Malpe, Kapu, Hiriyadka, and Brahmavar experienced moderate showers amidst cloudy weather. Karkala and Kundapura taluks also saw moderate rainfall on Sunday. Hebri, Kollur, and the surrounding areas experienced intermittent heavy rain.

Agricultural activities have picked up due to the rain. The district recorded an average rainfall of 18.76 mm over the past 24 hours, ending at 8:30 AM on Sunday.
