Pet dog saves woman attempting suicide at Netravati bridge

A 36-year-old woman who climbed the parapet of the Netravati Bridge with the intent of ending her life over a dispute with her husband was saved by her pet dog.

On Thursday night, the woman, a resident of Piligoodu left her home and for the Netravati Bridge planning to jump into the river. Her dog had followed her from home.

When she tried to climb over the bridge’s parapet, the dog sensed the danger and held onto her churidar, trying to pull her back. It also began barking to attract the attention of passersby.

A motorcyclist who noticed this alerted a local social worker, U.T. Fayaz. They managed to pull the woman back to safety.

Love Marriage 16 Years Ago

The woman, originally from Bengaluru, had a love marriage with a man from Piligoodu after they became acquainted while working in the state capital. A year ago, the couple built a house with inherited property and began residing here with their two children.

Recently, disagreements had arisen between the woman and her husband, who is a mechanic. Depressed with this, the woman decided to end her life.

Refuses to Return Home

After rescuing her, the woman was provided with counseling efforts throughout Friday. She, however refused to return to her husband’s home.

The police and local residents tried to persuade her but without success. Currently, she is staying at a friend’s house where she is learning tailoring. Her mother is expected to come from Bengaluru to take her home on Saturday. The woman’s two children are currently with their father.
