The Kodagu district administration has imposed a ban on the movement of heavy goods vehicles on National Highway 275 following the deterioration in the condition of the road due to the heavy rain.

The daily movement of overloaded goods and transport vehicles will further worsen the condition of the roads. Also, landslides have been reported in the district posing a significant hazard to road traffic and causing accidents.

In order to mitigate these risks, the district administration has imposed restrictions on the movement of vehicles with gross weight of more than 18,500 kilograms, bullet tankers, shipping cargo containers, long chassis (multi-axle) vehicles and vehicles transporting timber. These restrictions will remain in effect until the end of the monsoon season in Kodagu district.

Under the powers conferred by Section 11 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1961, Section 33 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Rule 221-A(5) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (Amendment Rules, 1990), and Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, the District Commissioner and Regional Transport Authority Chairman, Venkat Raja, has issued orders to regulate traffic throughout Kodagu district from July 1 to July 30, in the interest of the safety of local residents, vehicle operators, and public property.

The Police and Transport Departments have been directed to set up well-organized check posts at the district borders of Kushalnagar and Sampaje on National Highway 275, to maintain 24-hour surveillance, conduct mobile patrolling, and take appropriate action against violators of this order, as informed by the District Commissioner and Regional Transport Authority Chairman.

Exempted Vehicles: Vehicles supplying cooking gas and fuel, milk supply vehicles, vehicles used for government work, school and college vehicles, and public passenger vehicles (including multi-axle buses).
