2 inmates injured in brawl at Mangaluru jail

Mangaluru: Two undertrials were injured in a brawl between rival gangs at the Mangaluru jail on Monday evening, police said.

The injured inmates have been identified as Mohammad Sameer alias Kadapa Sameer (33) from Ullal and Mohammad Mansoor alias Boliyar Mansoor (30) from Boliyar. They are receiving treatment at Wenlock Hospital.

Both sustained injuries to the head, shoulder, and other body parts. The police said that sharp objects from the kitchen were used in the attack.

The two had been in judicial custody for the past 20 days. The attack was carried out by Topi Noufal and ten other members of the rival gang between 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM.

Police said the attackers included Mufad Rifat (28), Mohammad Rizwan (34), Ibrahim Kallel (30), Umar Farooq Irfan, Altaf, Noufal, Zainuddin, and others. Both the attackers and the victims have criminal records and are involved in numerous cases, they added.

The incident was captured on CCTV.

Based on the jail authorities’ complaint, a case has been registered at Barke Police Station, and an investigation is ongoing. Senior officials visited the jail.
