Kundapura: A man jumped into the overflowing Varahi River and went missing near Kandluru on Tuesday afternoon reportedly over a domestic quarrel.
The missing has been identified as Harish (44), a videographer from Kalavara village.
It is gathered that the incident happened at around 1:30 PM when Harish along with his wife, mother, and sister, was returning home in an autorickshaw after attending counseling at the Kandlur police station. Harish told the rickshaw driver to stop, saying he would throw his sacred thread into the river.
As his wife, mother, and sister watched, Harish allegedly jumped into the river. Despite the presence of people at the spot, the heavy rain made it difficult to rescue him from the overflowing river.
The Kandlur police, Kundapura fire brigade, and disaster management team conducted a search using boats, with local boatmen assisting. However, by evening, Harish was still missing.
Harish (44) and Nagaratna (33) had an inter-caste love marriage about 13 years ago. They have two children. Recently, the couple had frequent quarrels over various issues. Nagaratna filed a petition at the Kandlur police station requesting counsel for her husband. On Tuesday, the police counseled the couple in the presence of Harish’s mother and sister. While returning from the station, Harish jumped into the river.
Suicide is preventable. If you get any such thoughts, consult or seek expert help.
