“Perhaps if Toby had been a hit, I wouldn’t have this much energy. But the failure of that film has filled me with a new energy. I’m happy about it.” These are the direct words of Raj B Shetty.

Generally, accepting the failure of a film is challenging. Particularly, when an anticipated film fails, many hesitate to discuss it. However, Raj B Shetty has embraced the failure of “Toby” as a valuable experience and a course correction process.

Speaking on the matter, he said, “If Toby had been a big hit, I might have continued making films once every two years. In my opinion, failure provides a very beautiful experience. In this aspect, I consider myself lucky. It took me some time to adjust. The failure of Toby is the reason for my current energy. That failure taught me a new lesson, showed me where I went wrong, how to correct it and move forward, and how our thinking should change. I never thought failure could provide so much freedom,” says Raj B Shetty.

Raj elaborates on how failure became a beautiful experience. “Winning only teaches you confidence. It brings a sense that what you’re doing is right. But failure raises numerous questions. Why did this happen, what did I say, what should have been done differently? It raises all these questions. Then we realize where we have deviated from our roots. It’s like a course correction…

“We come to the cinema (field) as ordinary people with nothing. After achieving some success, small changes occur, but we don’t notice them. Failure makes those changes visible if observed correctly. I never blame people for a film’s failure. Watching or not watching a film is their freedom. Failure teaches you where you erred in your effort,” he says, taking the failure of “Toby” as an inspiration for his new film.

Raj B Shetty’s upcoming film “Roopanthara,” in which he stars, is set to release on July 26.
