Mangaluru/Udupi: Coastal districts face isolation threat due to landslides

Team Udayavani, Jul 19, 2024, 9:05 AM IST

Due to heavy continuous rainfall, all ghat roads connecting the coast to other districts have experienced landslides. There is a fear that the coastal districts may become isolated.

If the situation persists and connectivity is not restored, there could be a shortage of essential items like fruits and vegetables.

Shiradi Ghat Closed

A landslide occurred in the Sakleshpur section of Shiradi Ghat, leading to a ban on vehicular movement. Barricades have been installed at Mani.

Mani-Mysuru Road: Night Traffic Prohibited

Due to a crack on the Mani-Mysuru National Highway near Madhenadu’s Kartoji and the fear of soil from nearby hills sliding onto the road, the Kodagu district commissioner has ordered a night traffic ban for four days starting from 8 PM on Thursday.

Shirur Landslide: NH 66 Closed

A landslide near Shiroor in Ankola taluk on Tuesday blocked the Mangaluru-Goa highway, which has not yet been cleared. Consequently, traffic on this route remains suspended.

Charmadi, Nagodi, Maala Roads open

Currently, only Charmadi Ghat Road, Nagodi Ghat Road, and Maala Ghat Road are open for traffic. Despite minor landslides in some sections of Hulikal Road, vehicles are still moving. However, all other ghat roads being closed has increased the pressure on these routes.

With heavy rainfall continuing, there is a concern that these roads might also be closed. The Bisile Ghat Road is narrow, making travel difficult.
