Mangaluru: Outrage over pub’s party invite to students

Mangaluru: A poster inviting students to a “Students Wednesday Night” drinks party has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

A pub in Derebail Konchady organized this event on Wednesday, directly inviting students. The poster, shared on social media, stated that students would be allowed entry only with a college ID and offered free drinks for girls.

The public has questioned the appropriateness of enticing students with such offers. They have demanded police intervention and strict measures to prevent similar events in the future.

Speaking to Udayavani, City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal said that as soon as the matter came to their attention, the party was halted. The Excise Department has been directed to take appropriate action including imposing fines, on those involved, he added.

“On July 25, 2024, it came to our attention through some posters being circulated via whatsapp that was promoting alcohol consumption to students and minors through messages on social media, offering certain discounts to them on a particular day.

This action constitutes a violation of Karnataka Excise Act, 1965 and the conditions specified under licensing provisions. Consequently, the Excise Department has filed an FIR in Cr No 5/2024-25/1503DySE/150309 against the establishment u/s 36 of Karnataka Excise Act, 1965.

For the said violation, Excise department is the only Authority empowered to file the case.

However, Mangalore City Police remains committed to preventing such kind of activities in bars and pubs. Accordingly, a notice was already issued to the owner yesterday by police. In future also all efforts would be made to prevent such violations.
