Amid the ongoing unrest in neighbouring Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and avoid provocation.
The Chief Minister declined to comment on the developments in Bangladesh, stressing that it is the prerogative of the Ministry of External Affairs to respond.
‘I urge all citizens of West Bengal to maintain peace and steer clear of any form of provocation,’ Banerjee stated at the West Bengal assembly.
She also emphasized that whatever decision the Centre takes on this issue, the state will adhere to it.
Reports indicate that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country following massive protests that have resulted in over 106 deaths in the past two days.
