National Handloom Day celebrations inaugurated in Udupi

Udupi: The National Handloom Day celebrations were inaugurated at the Rajangana of Sri Krishna Math in Udupi on Wednesday. The event was organized by Padmashali Nekara Pratishthana Udupi, with the cooperation of Udupi Prathamika Nekarara Seva Sahakari Sangha under the aegis of Paraya Sri Puthige Matha and Sri Krishna Matha.

Sri Sugunendra Teertha Sripada from Puttige Math inaugurated the event and delivered his blessings. Retired MIT Professor Narayana Shenai and Dr. Vijayendra spoke about the importance of handloom and cottage industries and the contributions of the Padmashali community.

President of the Pratishthana, Ratnakar Indrali, presented the introduction. Vice President Manjunath Manipal welcomed the attendees, and Sadashiva Golijoor hosted the event.

During the program, the brand “Linen Shirting” was unveiled. Premium handloom sarees from Udupi Handloom World were launched, and a scheme guaranteeing a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 10,000 for weavers was introduced under the concept of “Come to Weaving.” Handloom patrons who support weavers were honored.

The inauguration of the new batch of the Samarth Kendra Central Government-sponsored handloom training workshop took place. Additionally, incentive funds of approximately Rs. 2.5 lakh were distributed to 20 women weavers, each receiving Rs. 300 for an Udupi saree. Senior weavers were also felicitated during the event.
