Melkar: Public protest against incomplete National Highway construction

The ongoing construction of the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway has become a persistent source of frustration for the residents of Melkar. Despite promises made by KNR Constructions, the company responsible for the project, the issues faced by the public remain unresolved.

On Monday, August 12, residents, shopkeepers, and commuters staged a protest at Melkar, a rapidly growing area that serves as a key link between Mangaluru, Bengaluru, and Konaje University. The protestors blocked the company’s vehicles, demanding immediate action to address the poor condition of the roads.

For years, the incomplete highway construction has caused severe inconvenience. During the monsoon, the roads become muddy and nearly impassable, while in dry weather, the dust from the unpaved sections creates health hazards. Shopkeepers have reported a decline in business, and local residents are concerned about the potential long-term health effects of the dust.

Protestors expressed their anger over the company’s failure to find a permanent solution. They highlighted the dangerous conditions caused by potholes and mud, which have made commuting a daily challenge. The protestors also emphasized that the dust from the unfinished roads poses serious risks to their health, including respiratory and heart-related illnesses.

The protestors demanded that the issue be resolved by Monday, August 18. Only after receiving a clear commitment from company officials did they allow the blocked vehicles to pass. The officials promised to begin laying asphalt on the road in Melkar within a week, ensuring that the situation would improve.

Previously, the locals had also raised concerns about the unscientific design of an underpass in Melkar, which they claimed had caused significant inconvenience to the area’s businesses.
