In response to the horrific incident of a medical student being raped and brutally murdered at the R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for the suspension of non-emergency and routine medical services for 24 hours, starting from 6 AM on August 17 until 6 AM on August 18.
Announcing their support for this protest, the members of the IMA Udupi-Karavali and Puttur branches have informed that they will be closing their clinics and hospitals for 24 hours, excluding emergency services.
Dr. Narasimha Sharma Kanavu, President of the IMA Puttur branch, and Dr. Ganesh Prasad Mudraje, the branch’s Secretary, in a press release issued on Friday, August 16 said that all medical institutions, including hospitals and private clinics, will participate in the shutdown, with emergency services being the only exception.
Additionally, condemning the recent incident in Kolkata and raising awareness among the general public regarding the safety of working women, the IMA Udupi Karavali, in collaboration with like-minded organizations, will be organizing a silent march on August 17. The march will take place from 6 PM to 7 PM, starting from Board High School in Udupi and ending at Jodukatte.
