Udupi: In a heartwarming gesture, the Udupi district administration took the initiative to arrange the marriage of a young woman who had grown up under the care of the government. The wedding was conducted on Friday, August 23, with full traditional rites.

The district administration, along with the Department of Women and Child Welfare, stood in as the bride’s family, ensuring her entry into married life. The ceremony was held at the Women’s Home auditorium, with Prasanna Bhat of Moodubelle officiating. Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari fulfilled the role of the mother by performing the ceremonial water pouring.

Khushbu Sumer, originally from Gujarat, was separated from her family at the age of six. After spending time in Karwar, she was sheltered at the Udupi Girls’ Home. She completed her education up to PUC and later resided at the Nittur Women’s Home, where she also worked as an employee in the Child Protection Unit. She entered into matrimony with Madhuraj A.D., a resident of Thirthahalli.

Madhuraj owns four acres of agricultural land and operates a catering business in Thirthahalli. The wedding was attended by public representatives, officials, various dignitaries, journalists, and the groom’s family, who all extended their blessings to the couple. The marriage was officially registered in the presence of Women’s Home Superintendent Pushpa Rani at the Sub-Registrar’s office.
