Kundapura: It is common for the wealthy to contribute to the development of temples. However, it is rare for someone to donate money saved from begging.

Ashwathamma, a resident of Kanchugodu in Gangolli, is one such rare philanthropist who recently donated Rs 1.16 lakh, collected from begging to the Lakshminarayana Temple in Kundapura.

A devout follower of Lord Ayyappa, Ashwathamma says she has donated to seven temples so far. Her philanthropic journey began with a donation of Rs 1.5 lakh to her hometown’s temple in Kanchugodu. She later donated Rs 1.5 lakh each to Anegudde Kumbashi Temple, Mangaladevi Temple, Bappanadu Temple, and Polali Temple. She also contributed Rs 1 lakh to the food fund at the Shri Guru Narasimha Temple in Sali village, Brahmavar Taluk.

A Dedicated Devotee

Ashwathamma began begging after the passing of her husband and son. A devoted follower of Lord Ayyappa, she visits Sabarimala annually. She has donated Rs 1 lakh for Annadanam (free food service) at Pampa and Rs 30,000 at Pandalam Temple.

When asked about her donations, she humbly states, “I don’t keep track of how much I’ve given. What I offer is not mine; it belongs to the Swami.”

A Heart Full of Generosity

Even at an advanced age, Ashwathamma begs for alms at various temple premises in the coastal region and at the Sasthan toll gate. She keeps only what she needs for her personal expenses and donates the rest to temples. Her selflessness has left many in awe.

Recognition

Ashwathamma was honored by the temple’s management committee, represented by Gokul Shetty. Hotel entrepreneur Vijay was also present at the event.

“It’s not important how much I’ve given or where. I don’t keep an account. Whenever I collect a significant amount, I keep a little for my expenses and donate the rest to temples. This is my form of service,” said Ashwathamma.
