JP Nagar police have arrested four women who attempted to steal expensive silk sarees while posing as customers at a saree shop on August 25.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Janaki (35), Ponnuru Malli (32), Medha Rajini (36), and Venkateshwaramma (40), all hailing from Andhra Pradesh.

Reportedly, six women entered the silk saree store and requested the staff to show them various types of silk sarees. While the staff was busy displaying the sarees, two of the women concealed eight expensive silk sarees inside their clothes and managed to escape from the store.

Shortly after, four other women attempted to execute a similar theft by hiding 10 silk sarees under their sarees and were about to leave the store. However, the shop owner noticed their suspicious behavior and called the police helpline (112).

The four women were apprehended and police recovered the 10 stolen sarees from them. Following the interrogation, another 28 silk sarees were seized from the residence of a friend of the accused in Koramangala.

The stolen sarees, valued at Rs 17.5 lakhs, were intended to be sold in Andhra Pradesh and bordering areas for a lower price, with each saree being sold for Rs 1,000 – 1,500.

Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayananda said that the arrests have helped solve three other silk saree theft cases previously registered at the J.P. Nagar and Jayanagar police stations.
