Mangaluru: PWD to replace unsafe footbridges with concrete structures in DK and Udupi Districts

The Public Works Department (PWD) in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts has announced plans to replace temporary footbridges, which students frequently use, with sturdy concrete footbridges. These footbridges are currently deemed unsafe, and the PWD aims to prioritize the construction of 22 such bridges in various areas.

22 Footbridges at a Cost of Rs 3 Crore
In Dakshina Kannada, 22 footbridges will be constructed in eight legislative constituencies, with an estimated budget of Rs 4.04 crore. Locations include Ullal, Pavoor, Konaje, Bantwal, Padupanambur, Moodushedde, and others.

Prioritizing Unsafe Areas

The primary focus of this project is to address areas where existing footbridges, primarily temporary structures over streams, pose a danger to students and the public. These footbridges are crucial for daily commutes in rural areas, and their unsafe conditions have been a concern.

Proposals for 301 More Footbridges

Although 22 footbridges have received approval, proposals for 301 additional footbridges have been submitted to the Chief Engineer’s office. This proposal, costing Rs 64 crore, is still pending approval, with expectations for phased approval in the future, said Amarnath Jain, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, Mangaluru.

Udupi District: Rs 3 Crore for 30 Footbridges

In Udupi district, Rs 3 crore has been allocated for constructing 30 footbridges in key areas, including Udupi, Kapu, Brahmavar, Baindur, Kundapura, Hebri, and Karkala.
