Udupi: Controversy over Koragajja Nema scene in Kaljiga film

The Tulunadu Daivaradhane Samraksahna Vedike has raised objections to a scene depicting the Koragajja Nema ritual in the recently released film Kaljiga, claiming that it disrespects the tradition of Daiva worship. The forum has demanded the removal of the scene, arguing that it undermines the sanctity of the ancient worship practice.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, the Vedike’s honorary president, Dilraj Alva, emphasized the cultural importance of Daiva worship to the people of Tulunadu, calling it an integral part of their identity and belief system. “Daiva worship is a core part of Tulunadu’s heritage. Recently, our sacred tradition has been facing challenges from the entertainment industry. It started with Kantara, which we initially took pride in, but it has now led to the depiction of Daiva rituals in places like Bengaluru and Mysuru. We must all be vigilant about preserving our culture,” Alva said.
The forum clarified that their objection is not a personal attack on Kaljiga or its creators. “We want everyone to watch and support Tulu cinema, but the scene involving Daiva worship should be removed,” Alva added.
Vedike member Sahana Sundar Sood also expressed concern, stating, “It is inappropriate to depict sacred rituals as mere entertainment. If Daiva worship is reduced to entertainment, it loses its spiritual significance. The increase in instances of disrespect towards Daiva worship could become commonplace if this continues. If needed, we will oppose any future sequels to Kantara. We insist that the controversial scene in Kaljiga be cut before the film is released widely.”
The press conference was also attended by the forum’s Mangaluru district president, Bharathraj, and member Girish.
