Shirva: The last rites of Police Sub-Inspector Nityananda Shetty (51), a resident of Nyarm Shri Dharmajarandaya Daivastana Road in Shirva, were conducted with full state honours on September 18 at his residence. Shetty, who was serving in the wireless control room at the Udupi District Superintendent of Police Office, passed away in his sleep due to a heart attack.

Shetty had served in the police department for 28 years, including at the Mangaluru and Malpe Coastal Security Force and the wireless control room at the Udupi SP office. He was promoted to the rank of PSI four years ago.

Under the leadership of ARSI Shashidhar Naik from the Udupi District Armed Reserve Police, three rounds of ceremonial gunfire were conducted as a final tribute. Shetty’s son, Abhinandan, and his brother performed the final rites.

Kapu MLA Suresh Shetty Gurme, Udupi District Superintendent of Police K. Arun Kumar, Additional SPs G.S. Siddhalingaiah and Parameshwar Hegde, and Karkala DYSP Aravind Kalagujji paid their respects and offered condolences to the family, including Shetty’s mother, wife, children, and brother.

Former MLA Lalaji R. Mendon, Inspector Hemachandra from the Udupi SP office control room, Shirva PSI Saktivelu E., and officials from the Udupi and Mangaluru SP offices’ wireless control rooms were present. Officers from the district armed reserve police and staff from Shirva police station, along with government officials and local residents, also paid their respects.

Post-mortem not conducted at district hospital:

After the investigation by police officers at the Shirva Community Health Centre, Shetty’s body was taken to the Udupi District Government Hospital for a post-mortem. However, due to a shortage of doctors, the procedure was conducted at Manipal Hospital. Despite a visit by Additional SP Siddhalingaiah to the district hospital, the inability to conduct a post-mortem for a government official raised concerns among citizens about the hospital’s response to the general public.
