Belagavi: Doctors from Siddhagiri Hospital and Research Centre at Kolhapur’s Kaneri Math made headlines by successfully performing complex brain surgery on a patient who was playing the flute and conversing during the procedure.
The patient, suffering from a brain tumor, underwent the surgery without general anesthesia. Instead, only the outer part of the brain was numbed, keeping the patient fully conscious throughout the operation. During the five-hour-long surgery, the patient continuously played the flute and spoke.
Post-surgery, the patient is responding well, said renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Shivashankar Marajakke from Siddhagiri Hospital.
During a press conference, Dr. Marajakke mentioned that performing such a complex surgery in a rural area is a rare achievement for the hospital. “In other places, the cost of this procedure would be around Rs 10 to 15 lakh. However, we conducted it for just Rs 1.20 lakh,” he added.
