Mangalore University to celebrate its 45th Foundation Day on Sept 25

Mangaluru: Mangalore University will celebrate its 45th Foundation Day on September 25, at 11 AM in the Mangala Auditorium, said Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Prof. Dharma revealed that former Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde will be the chief guest for the occasion.

Financial Challenges

Responding to questions about funding issues, Prof. Dharma highlighted the shortage of internal funds following the COVID-19 pandemic. “Development grants have stopped coming in, and the number of affiliated colleges has reduced. We are currently relying heavily on examination fees. However, we are taking steps to pull the university out of these financial challenges,” he said.

Pension Payments

Regarding pending pension payments to retired professors, Prof. Dharma acknowledged that dues ranging from Rs 21 to Rs 23 crores are pending for 45 retired professors. He added that the university would benefit if the government provides this amount, and assured that efforts are being made to resolve the issue as the contributions of these retired professors have significantly enhanced the university’s reputation.

Decline in Postgraduate Enrollments

Prof. Dharma expressed concern over the decline in interest for postgraduate courses, calling it a “painful matter.” He mentioned that efforts are underway to revise the syllabus in line with current industry requirements.

Physical Mark Sheets Awaiting Government Order

He also addressed issues faced by students with digital mark sheets provided via DigiLocker, stating that while the government has directed the issuance of physical mark sheets, the university is waiting for an official written order before proceeding.

Prof. Dharma further highlighted that financial prudence has been implemented at the university, cutting unnecessary expenses. He expects savings of around Rs 3 crores over the next few months. Excessive mobile phone usage had previously cost around Rs 45 lakhs, which has now been controlled. Additionally, efforts have been made to reduce paper usage and prevent waste of water and electricity.
