Mangaluru: The Mangaluru First Additional District and Sessions Civil Court has ordered an insurance company to pay Rs 1.35 crore as compensation to the dependents of a man who lost his life in a road accident.

The order was issued by Judge Lakshmi G.M., who directed the compensation under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The victim, Mahesh Bhat, an employee of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) passed away on May 18, 2018, after his motorcycle was hit by a Rajasthan-registered lorry near Kottara Chowki while he was on his way to work.

The case, filed under the Motor Vehicles Accident Claims Tribunal, sought compensation from the insurance company responsible for the lorry involved in the accident. The company’s lawyers presented several arguments to evade liability, but the court, after examining the documents and arguments from both sides, ruled in favor of the victim’s family.

The court ruled that Mahesh Bhat’s wife, son, and parents are entitled to receive compensation. The total amount awarded was Rs 1 crore 6 lakh, which included 6% interest from 2018 to 2024, bringing the final compensation to Rs 1.35 crore.

Lawyers A. Dinesh Bhandari, K.S.N. Adiga, Preethika K.M., and Trupti represented the victim’s family during the proceedings.
