Mangaluru: A man fell victim to a fraudulent online earnings scheme and lost Rs 5 lakh after being duped by scammers.
On September 28, the complainant clicked on an online earnings link through Instagram, which led him to a WhatsApp chat with an unknown person using the number 9733674701. The scammer promised that liking certain videos would earn the complainant between Rs 123 and Rs 5,000.
The complainant, trusting the scammer, liked the videos and received Rs 123 deposited into his account. The scammer then asked the complainant to join a Telegram group called “D929 Global High Salary Group,” where two individuals using the usernames Anil Singh and Trisha Verma convinced him to deposit Rs 5,000 to complete another task. The complainant followed through, but when he tried to withdraw his earnings, the scammers told him he had made a mistake and needed to deposit Rs 50,000 to rectify it.
Believing their lies, the complainant continued transferring money, eventually sending Rs 5,09,000 to different accounts. Realizing he had been scammed, he lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru South police station, who have registered a case and are investigating the fraud.
