Geethartha Chinthane 70: Arjuna’s fear due to delusion

Arjuna’s arrogance is not genuine. This is clear because he later surrenders. If he were truly arrogant by nature, he wouldn’t have done so. The arrogance he displays now is situational, driven by delusion—it’s an arrogance that arises out of emotional agitation. In this context, Arjuna is referred to as “Kaunteya.” Such terms are used appropriately depending on the situation. Kunti’s grace plays a significant role here. She had three children, but there were two more mantras available. At that point, Madri wished for children for herself as well.

In the world, we often witness jealousy between co-wives, but Kunti stands apart from this. She didn’t want Madri to remain childless or feel incomplete, so she gave her the mantra to have children. Due to Kunti’s generosity, Arjuna is addressed as “Kaunteya.”

Because of his delusion, Arjuna feels fear when he sees his relatives, thinking that he must kill them. He trembles with fear, saying, “The Gandiva slips from my hands.” His lips quiver, and he sweats—these are all signs of fear. Goosebumps are not only caused by wonder; they can also arise from fear.
