Dr. Deviprasad Shetty, President of the Kambala Committee of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Kasaragod districts, has expressed concern over PETA’s controversy surrounding the traditional sport of Kambala. He criticized the animal rights organization for creating a dispute without understanding the traditional sport properly, despite it being recognized nationwide and enjoying full support from the state government.
Dr. Shetty emphasized that the buffaloes are not subjected to cruelty. Instead, they are raised with great care, with the owners treating them affectionately and providing modern facilities for their well-being.
He also highlighted the efforts made by a dedicated team responsible for the buffaloes’ feeding and rest during their journey to participate in the Bengaluru Kambala event. This commitment has earned public appreciation, he said.
Referring to the petition filed by PETA in the High Court, Dr. Shetty remarked that citing animal cruelty as the sole reason for the case was unjust.
