Belagavi: As many as 41 newborn babies have died in the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital over the past three months. Though the exact cause of these deaths has yet to be confirmed, it is speculated that malfunctioning oxygen compressors might have contributed to the fatalities.

BIMS Director Dr. Ashok Shetty, addressing these allegations, dismissed the claims about oxygen scarcity causing the deaths. “Yes, it is true that 41 newborns have died within three months, but these deaths can be attributed to various reasons,” he clarified. Dr. Shetty added that of the two air compressors in the maternity ward, one has malfunctioned and is currently under repair.

“It is premature to conclude that a lack of oxygen led to these deaths. A thorough investigation will be conducted regarding the deaths,” he affirmed.

In detail, BIMS Hospital recorded 12 deaths in August, 18 in September, and 11 in October, totaling 41. Hospital sources have attributed these deaths to complications such as preterm births, low birth weight, and heart-related issues.

Meanwhile, the non-operational air compressor has reportedly been awaiting repair for three months. The hospital administration had already reviewed compressor costs on September 4, but the purchase process remains pending.
