Geethartha Chinthane – 85: The Distinction Between Kashmala and Kalmasha

Krishna pinpointed that what clouded Arjuna’s mind was Kashmala. There are two types of impurities: Kashmala—inner impurity, and Kalmasha—outer impurity. Both are forms of defilement, but their nature differs. This dialogue occurs during a critical moment. If Arjuna had expressed these feelings before preparing for battle, it would have been different. However, such hesitation is out of place once one stands ready for war. Timing is crucial, and such doubts are inappropriate in times of urgency.
Krishna’s words here are directed toward those lacking enlightenment; for the wise, they might even seem offensive. Pure emotion without reason, or reason overwhelmed by emotion, serves no purpose. In every situation, thought must come before emotion, especially in crucial moments like battle. Here, thoughts should take precedence, with emotions kept in check.
When it comes to divine matters, the approach is different—knowledge, feeling, and devotion should come first, followed by contemplation. However, in modern meditation camps, people are taught how to meditate on God, but often without any grounding in understanding His nature. This type of meditation can be termed Nirvishesha Dhyana (meditation without specifics). Ideally, thinking should precede feeling in all aspects, with firm principles leading the way.
