The Charmadi Ghat section of National Highway-73 is set to be upgraded to a two-lane road, with the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, releasing ₹343.74 crore for the project, South Canara MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta announced. The project, connecting Mangaluru to Moodigere and further to Tumkur, aims to significantly improve transportation and accessibility through this region.
The planned development will cover the 75 km to 86.20 km stretch of the highway, bringing much-needed expansion and enhancement to the mountainous Charmadi Ghat road. According to MP Chowta, the tender process for the highway work has been completed, and construction is expected to begin shortly.
As one of Karnataka’s crucial routes, the upgrade of Charmadi Ghat is anticipated to ease travel for coastal region passengers, while also facilitating smoother goods transport. This improvement is expected to boost commercial activity in the area, strengthening the region’s reputation as Karnataka’s commercial gateway.
MP Chowta expressed gratitude on behalf of the district’s residents to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, and other officials involved in releasing funds and prioritizing the project.
