Kinnigoli: Non-functional CCTV cameras raise security concerns

Kinnigoli: Despite hosting numerous nationalized bank branches, cooperative banks, and six educational institutions, the bustling town of Kinnigoli has been left vulnerable as its central security camera system has reportedly been non-operational for an extended period.

Installed with public contributions to enhance surveillance in the main circle, the CCTV camera served as a deterrent to crimes and aided in traffic monitoring until it was damaged by a lightning strike.

The high-resolution CCTV setup, established at a cost of Rs 1.30 lakh, was initially linked to the Panambur ACP office, providing crucial support in monitoring road accidents, criminal activities, and other emergencies. However, the camera has remained inoperative since the damage occurred, and local authorities have shown little interest in repairing or replacing it. Concerned citizens are now calling for urgent action to restore the CCTV system for their safety.

Traffic and Safety Issues Escalate

Kinnigoli is a major transit hub, connecting areas like Kateel, Mulki, Pakshikere, Moodbidri, and Mundkur, with hundreds of buses and thousands of vehicles passing through daily. However, traffic in Kinnigoli remains poorly managed, with insufficient traffic personnel and no permanent police presence.

Unauthorized parking by autorickshaws and the opposite-direction movement of school vehicles in the bus station area add to the chaos, while an overall lack of surveillance exacerbates the problem.

ATM Theft Attempt Highlights Security Gaps

The area has previously experienced incidents like an attempted ATM heist and thefts, prompting the need for surveillance and a permanent police outpost. In the absence of functional public CCTV cameras, authorities often rely on footage from private cameras to investigate crimes.

Many residents and organizations are now appealing for the installation of an outpost and a new CCTV system to enhance the safety of the town and address the rising crime and traffic concerns in Kinnigoli.
