Udupi: Duo convicted for harassing minor girl

Udupi: A local court convicted two youths accused of sexually harassing a minor girl in 2022.
The district special court convicted Shimoga-based Praveen Kumar (20) and Ajay Kumar (19) for the crime and sentenced them to three years imprisonment and imposed a fine.
According to the charges, the accused met when the victim girl from Kundapura had been to visit her parents in Shivamogga. She lived at her grandparents’ house in Kundapura for schooling. In November 2022, the two youths wooed her and took her to a uninhabited area and sexually harassed her. After the girl fell unconscious, the accused fled.
The girl was found unconscious by her relatives. As per the complaint filed by her grandfather, a case was registered in Kundapur police station regarding the harassment.
The then Kundapur CI Gopikrishna KR filed the charge sheet.
Out of total 23 witnesses in the case, 12 witnesses were examined, and 21 documents were admitted as evidence. District Special Court Judge Srinivasa Suvarna sentenced the duo to 3 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 14,000.
Of the fines collected, the court ordered that the victim be paid Rs 10,000 as fine, Rs 4,000 to the government. The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the victim.
Special public prosecutor YT Raghavendra argued for the government.
