World Diabetes Day 2024: Kasturba Hospital Manipal Hosts Zumba Session at Malpe Beach to Raise Diabetes Awareness

Manipal: Diabetes is increasing across the globe, and India tops the list among the countries with large number of people with diabetes. To create awareness and take remedial measures, 14th November is observed as World diabetes day across the globe. In observance of World Diabetes Day, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, in collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology, organized a special Zumba session at Malpe Beach on November 15, 2024. The event aimed to spread awareness about diabetes and promote a healthy, active lifestyle among the public.

On this occasion Dr Sahana Shetty, Professor and Head Department of Endocrinology said Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate with 11% prevalence of diabetes in India. Diabetes is the main risk factor for heart diseases, kidney failure, foot ulcers and vision loss in adults. It also affects mental health and quality of life. Hence there is a need for a holistic approach to diabetes care which not only addresses physical health but also mental well-being. Hence, the theme of world diabetes day 2024 is “Diabetes and wellbeing “highlight the importance of a holistic approach to diabetes care encompassing physical health, mental, and societal well-being. There is also a call for Breaking Barriers and Bridging Gaps in the fight against diabetes.

Diabetes can be prevented to a great extent by adopting a healthy lifestyle in terms of healthy eating practices and physical activity. Physical activities like exercises both aerobic and resistance exercises, walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, yoga, Zumba etc not only improves physical health but also improves our emotional well-being. To emphasize the importance of physical activity both in the prevention and management of diabetes, we have arranged this Zumba session at the beautiful sea beach.

Dr. Padmaraj Hegde, Dean of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), and Dr. Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital. Both leaders reiterated the hospital’s commitment to raising awareness about diabetes and promoting preventive measures through community engagement. “Events like this Zumba session are vital in educating the public about diabetes prevention and encouraging people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. It’s a step toward a healthier, diabetes-free future.”

The successful turnout and positive response to the Zumba session reflect the growing awareness of the importance of lifestyle changes in combating diabetes. Kasturba Hospital plans to continue organizing similar events, reinforcing its commitment to public health and wellness.
