Geethartha Chinthane 108: Self-evolution through grief over neglecting duty

Team Udayavani, Nov 29, 2024, 9:50 AM IST

Many times, we are unaware of God’s will. When His will is known, one kind of dharma applies, and when it is unknown, another kind is required. In moments of doubt, one must adhere to a specific dharma. For example, during an exam, even if only a few questions are to be answered, all questions must be reviewed. Similarly, when God’s will is unclear, actions must be taken across all dimensions.

There is no sorrow in situations where nothing can be done or saved. Lord Krishna reminds us: “Whatever is destined to happen will happen. Have you fulfilled your duty when the time was right?” The real concern is whether we perform our duties properly or not.

If one experiences regret for not fulfilling a duty and resolves to do better if given another chance, this is considered sattvic sorrow—a noble kind of grief that fosters self-evolution. God has given us a physical body as a tool for salvation, allowing us to perform duties and accumulate merit.

Krishna illustrates this with an example: If a son is a Deputy Commissioner and his father is a Sub-Inspector, the father must salute the son as per protocol. This is the duty assigned by their roles. Obeying divine commands is a virtue, while disregarding them is a sin.

Krishna’s message of Agatasoon emphasizes that even in one’s mind, one should not go against God’s will. Accepting His will and striving to perform one’s duties sincerely is the true path to spiritual growth.
