Mangaluru: Dangerous manholes in create risk for commuters

Two-wheeler riders at risk; Traffic congestion worsens

Mangaluru: The issue of deteriorating manholes on the city’s roads remains unresolved, posing a growing threat to public safety. For years, faulty manholes have troubled residents. The collapse of manhole covers into the structures has become an accident hazard.

In areas with heavy traffic like Bendorewell, Bunts Hostel, Mallikatte, Bijai, and M.G. Road, several manhole covers have sunk slightly below road level. This creates a risk for vehicles and worsens traffic congestion in the city.

In some places, the manholes are recessed significantly below the road surface, increasing the chances of accidents, especially for two-wheeler riders. It is imperative that the City Corporation and Smart City Project authorities address the issue of manhole maintenance while continuing developmental works.

Hazardous Manholes Across Roads

Near Kadri Maidan, a manhole cover has completely collapsed, leaving only the metal rods exposed. At Bijai near the KSRTC bus stand, manhole covers on both lanes have sunk, creating a potential danger. A similar situation is reported on the main road near Balmatta. Such irregularities on main and inner roads are causing difficulties for vehicle users.

Challenges for Two-wheeler Riders

“Two-wheeler riders narrate close shaves with accidents due to sudden dips in manhole covers that are hard to spot while riding. Many city roads face similar issues, urging immediate action from the Corporation,” said Harish K., a two-wheeler rider.
