Mangaluru: Notorious chain snatcher duo nabbed

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru CCB police successfully arrested two notorious chain snatchers involved in incidents in the Mangaluru Commissionerate area and the rural limits of Karkala police station in Udupi district.

The accused, identified as Habib Hasan alias Chombugudde Habib alias Abbi (43) from Krishna Nagar 7th Block, Surathkal, currently residing in Chembugudde, Thokkottu, and Umar Shiyaf (29) from Adde Addi House, Bantwal B. Mood, have been apprehended.

Case 1: On December 6, Sujina D’Souza, an Anganwadi worker in Naringana village, was attacked by two bike-borne men while locking the door of the Anganwadi center. The men snatched her gold chain and fled. A case was registered at the Konaje police station.

Case 2: On December 9, in Karkala rural limits, two individuals on a bike snatched a gold chain from Vasanti, who was walking home in Bol village. A case was registered at the Karkala rural police station.

Investigation and Arrest:

During the investigation, it was revealed that Habib Hasan and his accomplice, who had been recently released on bail, were involved in these crimes. Acting on a tip-off, the CCB team arrested the accused near Car Street in Mangaluru.

The police recovered a 17.43-gram gold chain, a Hero Honda bike used for the crime, and a knife from Habib. It was reported that the accused had intended to attack the police with the knife during his arrest.

Past Crimes:

Habib Hasan has 39 cases registered against him, including thefts, cattle lifting, and chain snatching in Mangaluru, Moodbidri, Surathkal, Ullal, Konaje, and other areas. Umar Shiaf has been implicated in murder attempt cases and chain-snatching incidents.
