In a shocking incident, a two-month-old girl was thrown into a lake by her mother in Kanabargi village, Belagavi taluk.

The mother believed the baby was suffering from epilepsy (fits). Locals who were washing cattle at the lake witnessed the incident and immediately jumped in to save the child.

The mother, identified as Shanta (35), wife of Robert Karavinakoppi, reportedly threw the baby into the lake and tried to flee the scene. Locals stopped her, counseled her, and handed the baby back to her. Later, the baby was admitted to a private children’s hospital in Belagavi.

Police from the Malmaruti station visited the spot and conducted an inquiry. Locals called an ambulance, and the baby was shifted to the hospital for further care.

Police Commissioner confirmed that Shanta has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
