Congress leader and MLC Ivan D’Souza has urged the Karnataka government to provide a financial incentive of Rs 5 lakh for each Kambala event held in the coastal and Malnad regions of the state.
Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the state Legislative Council, D’Souza highlighted that Kambala, a traditional buffalo race, is held in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, and Kasaragod districts and draws over 1 lakh spectators annually.
He emphasized that around 25 Kambala events are held every year and insisted that the Sports Authority of Karnataka officially recognize Kambala as a sport and extend government support to preserve and promote this cultural tradition.
Responding to the demand, Chairman N.S. Boseraju assured that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Chief Minister for appropriate action.
