Mangaluru: Preparations for Christmas are in their final stages along the coastal regions, with celebrations set to begin at midnight on December 24. Christians across the region will commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ with midnight masses and carol singing in churches.

Churches in Mangalore Diocese, including those in Bantwal, Puttur, Moodbidri, Kasaragod, Vitla, Mogarnad, Mudipu, and Mangaluru city, will start Christmas celebrations from 7 PM on Tuesday. The festivities include carol singing, followed by special midnight Masses led by priests. At the conclusion of the Mass, candles will be distributed, and the congregation will exchange greetings before participating in cultural programs.

The midnight Mass at Rosario Cathedral in Mangaluru will be officiated by the Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha.

The festive spirit is evident everywhere, with nativity cribs, stars, and bells adorning homes and churches. Special Christmas delicacies, especially cakes, and Kuswar, are in high demand. Many church organizations are preparing and distributing Christmas treats to the needy.

The sale of Christmas decorations, including trees and Santa Claus costumes, is in full swing. Churches in the region have been illuminated with decorative lights, adding to the festive mood.

Christmas Messages

Most Rev Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop – Mangalore Diocese: “Christmas celebrates the relationship between God and mankind and among humans. The birth of Jesus signifies the joy of God being with us. Amid challenges like wars, fears, and suffering, Jesus has come as the Prince of Peace and Hope. God is not the cause of our troubles; instead, they stem from selfishness and self-centeredness. Let this Christmas bring peace and harmony to all humanity. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!”

Most Rev. Lawrence Mukkuzhy, Bishop – Belthangady (Syro Malabar): “Christmas marks the birth of Christ, who came to liberate the poor, sorrowful, and sinful. Jesus taught us to live in harmony, love, and holiness. To experience peace, we must follow His teachings of pure love, shunning hatred and discord. May this Christmas bring rain, good crops, and peace to our land. Merry Christmas to all!”

Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Makarios, Bishop – Diocese of Puttur (Syro Malankara): “Christmas is not just about the birth of Jesus but carries a universal message for all. It is a reminder for us to rise above selfishness and contribute positively to others’ lives. Let this season inspire us to embrace hope and renew our spirit. Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas!”
