Beware of robbery on Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway: “Egg gang” raises its head

Mandya/Ramanagara: The notorious robbers along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, who had been dormant for months, have resurfaced with a new strategy. Previously targeting lone vehicles and motorcycles, the gang now uses eggs to execute their robberies.
In a shocking incident on Monday night near Boodanooru village’s service road, Vinod, a trader from Mandya, fell victim to the gang. While returning from Maddur to Mandya, three miscreants on motorcycles threw eggs at his car’s windshield. When Vinod turned on the wipers, the glass became completely smudged, forcing him to stop and clean it. At this point, the robbers attacked him with chili powder, assaulted him, and fled with Rs 55,000 in cash.
14 Cases Reported in Mandya Jurisdiction
The Bengaluru-Mysuru highway has witnessed several robbery cases in the past, especially in the Ramanagara and Mandya regions. Of the 14 robbery cases recorded in Mandya, 9 were solved, and the culprits were arrested. Similarly, of the 12 cases in Ramanagara district, 11 were resolved, leading to a brief lull in such incidents.
However, the recent incident indicates the rise of a new ‘egg’ gang that uses eggs as its choice of weapon.
Poor Lighting on Service Roads a Concern
The lack of basic infrastructure on the highway, such as streetlights and public toilets, is aiding these robberies. Motorists stopping for basic needs become easy targets. Most service roads and underpasses lack proper lighting, creating an environment where robbers can hide and ambush unsuspecting travelers.
Local residents have raised concerns about the growing threat and are urging authorities to install streetlights and improve safety measures along the highway to prevent such incidents in the future.
