Bantwal: Documenting the unsung heroes of Kambala

Bantwal: Kambala, the traditional folk sport of Tulu Nadu, is gaining popularity. However, there is limited documentation on the unique aspects of the sport, including the contributions of buffaloes, owners, and those working behind the scenes. Ramya Nityananda Shetty from Vamadapadavu has undertaken an innovative project to address this gap.
What began as a hobby of photographing Kambala gradually evolved into creating videos and, eventually, a book. Titled Kambala Loka – Kambala Achievers’ Success Stories, the book highlights the untold stories of individuals connected to the sport.
Ramya, a resident of Elianadugodu near Vamadapadavu and wife of Nityananda Shetty, was introduced to the intricacies of Kambala after her marriage. Inspired by her first visit to Hokkadigoli Kambala, she began attending weekly events, capturing moments through photography, and later sharing interviews on her husband’s YouTube channel.
In 2019, she started documenting the lives of Kambala racers, owners, buffaloes, artisans crafting accessories, commentators, referees, and photographers. These efforts culminated in the publication of four small books titled ‘Kambala Loka’ in phases. Now, a comprehensive 272-page book compiling all her work is ready for release.
The book will be launched on December 30 at 10:30 AM at the Ashwini Hall in Siddakatte.
